Sunny heRBs Oregano is an intensely flavoured herb and a part of our range of high-quality herbs.
Oregano is one of the easiest plants to grow and is one the herbs most commonly used in the kitchen, both in its fresh form and dried, as it readily manages to maintain its scent and taste.
Origanum, the botanical name, is composed of two words, “òros” meaning mountain and “ganào” meaning, “I am pleased”, which can be translated as “mountain pleasure”, considering that wild oregano grows most happily on sunny hills.
Oregano is highly appreciated by bees.
Since ancient times it has been considered a natural healing remedy thanks to its properties as an antiseptic, antispasmodic, digestive, diuretic and tonic.
Oregano: cultivation tips
This highly scented herb can be grown both in pots and directly in the garden.
A sunny position and well-drained soil are indispensable and care should be taken to only water oregano once the soil has dried out.
For a healthy, perfumed and productive plant, periodic fertilisation is highly recommended: a small quantity just before regrowth and half way through cutting for harvesting, in order to stimulate further growth and the development of new shoots.
Sunny heRBs oregano: how and when to harvest
From July to September, oregano is lush with small green leaves covering the entire stem and pail white or pink flowers. Oregano should be cut for harvesting during this flowering period by reducing the length of the stem by half with a knife.
